The Lector is instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. He/she may also announce the prayers intentions and, in the absence of a cantor, recite the Psalm between the readings. Lectors prayerfully prepare for their role in the Sacred Liturgy. They seek to combine faith with skill when proclaiming the Word of God.
Being a Lector is a "witness to faith". As The Bible is God's Word, and Jesus is the Word made Flesh, being a Lector is much more than good reading. Christ is present, of course, regardless of how effective the Lector is. However, our awareness of Christ's presence is strengthened when Lectors proclaim with faith, skill and the witness of a Christian life.
